The Yale Gynecologic Pathology Program provides teachings to residents,
fellows, and medical students in both the Department of Pathology
and the Department of Obstetrics
and
Gynecology.
Resident teaching is part of a dynamic environment of surgical pathology
training at Yale. We provide seven didactic lectures (one hour each)
every academic year to our residents and fellows. Most frequent teaching
activities are carried out at signout time under microscope. These “real-time” teaching
activities are most meaningful for our residents and fellows to learn
GYN pathology. Yale GYN pathologists focus not only on diagnostic criteria
but also on clinical implications of individual patients. A daily review
by the faculty of unusual and challenging cases assures an exchanging
ideas and experiences among gynecologic experts, which directly provides
extraordinary opportunities to our residents and fellows to be familiar
with the process of handling difficult cases.
The Yale Gynecologis Pathology Program also provides fellowship
training.
We currently have one clinical fellowship position every year. The
length of fellowship is typically one year. The overall aim of the
training is to provide the necessary environment for a fellow to
become an academically oriented gynecologic pathologist. The fellowship
training
is blended into the routine service work and also allows the fellow(s)
to carry out 1-2 translational research projects in a one-year period.
The fellow will spend approximately 60% of his/her time on service
and 40% on research. The detailed plan for the fellowship is available
when the fellowship starts. Research fellowship is available depending
on the funding in the program. We occasionally accept outstanding
candidates to do combined clinical and research fellowship with their
own financial
support (see Application Process).
Medical student teaching from the Yale GYN Pathology Program is
part of medical student teaching directed by Drs. Joseph Madri and
Stuart Flynn.
Faculty
in the GYN program provide lectures in GYN pathology, tutorials
in general pathology, and laboratory teaching for various kinds of
gross and microscopic pathology.
